In Tanzania, every fourth girl becomes pregnant before the age of 18. Safe contraception is barely known because the topic is taboo and sex lessons do not take place in Tanzania's schools. Students who become pregnant have to leave school and are often isolated and without support.
EBLI helps young mothers regain a foothold. Each year, the education program in Mwanza on Lake Victoria offers 100 young mothers aged 13 to 20 a new opportunity. They learn to take charge of their lives and to give their children a better future.
The comprehensive education program strengthens young single mothers by educating them about sexual health and rights. It provides basic entrepreneurial knowledge in business administration so that they can start their own small business. They also receive basic training in using computers and digital media. The program strengthens their self-confidence, which is crucial for their path to independence and self-reliance.
Following a long-standing partnership with terre des hommes Switzerland, Varem has directly taken over the financial sponsorship and support of the local partner organization EBLI since 2024.
